Genesis 2:24

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

The Huffington Post is reporting an AP story that ought make us take note. Apparently the Merriam-Webster Dictionary all the way back in 2003 added an additional definition to the word marriage: “the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage.” Merriam-Webster is not the only dictionary to make this change either. The authoritative dictionary of the English language, Oxford’s, is drafting an additional definition that would state marriage can refer to “long-term relationships between partners of the same sex.”

So what?!

There are two things that the Bible believer must remember in these circumstances.

First, things like this show us where our society currently is. The idea of gay marriage is becoming more and more acceptable. The Pew Forum Survey of 2006 clearly shows that those 18-29 believe homosexuals should be allowed to marry. Among those 30-49, the opposition to gay marriage is precarious at best. Barring American mores becoming more stable, gay marriage will become a reality in America just as it recently did in the traditionally Catholic Spain when the younger generations are not restrained by the older generation’s values.

Second, semantics do not change truth. I have 2 dogs named Mater and Fox. If tomorrow I began calling Mater a cat and I continued to do so for the next 12 years, he would be no more a cat than I. Dictionaries can include same-sex relationships, legislatures and courts can legalize it, the public can recognize it, but that does not make the union of 2 men or 2 women valid in God’s eyes.

He is the final Arbiter, and He will judge by His Word.
